Common Items That Can Damage Your Plumbing

When you are flushing items down the toilet or washing them down the drain, you could be severely damaging your plumbing system. Read on to find out why.

Septic systems and sewers collect these materials, which can build up over a long period of time and cause prolonged damage to the system.

In septic tanks, one of the primary functions is to decompose waste through the drainage system into pipes which will slowly let waste seep into the ground.

Unlike city water systems, septic systems are extremely sensitive and can be damaged by anything that takes a prolonged period of time to decompose. Some common items you might not think actual damage your septic system but do are:

  • Paper towels

  • Dental Floss

  • Coffee grounds

  • Grease

Any one of these four items has a longer than normal decomposition period or may never decompose. As a result, they build up and sit in the system for long periods, which could create back-ups into the house or the need to replace the septic tank. Sewer lines in the city suffer from similar problems. Although they are on a larger scale and you won’t have to directly pay for the cost of repair, items that take a long time to decompose or are water-soluble are difficult for water treatment plants to handle. Common items that are problematic for water treatment are:

  • Pharmaceuticals

  • Personal care products

  • Plastic microbeads

  • Grease

One of the most difficult to remove items is pharmaceuticals. Pills are commonly tossed into the toilet to be rid of, which poses a serious problem for water treatment plants. It’s nearly impossible for them to get all of the pill’s medical properties out of the water to make it safe because there are thousands if not millions of them that get flushed every day. Many of the properties of pills can kill, feminize, or cause otherwise irreversible damage to fish in the ecosystem.
